To provide visual effects for his album released in June 2018, Nas dropped a short film titled NASIR, the name of his eleventh studio project. The 16-minute short, directed by Rohan Blair-Mangat, showcases the perils of inner-city life and footage of his listening session in his hometown of Queens.
NASIR hosts only seven songs, mainly produced by Kanye West. It also features The-Dream, Diddy, Tony Williams, and 070 Shake. To possibly change listeners’ lukewarm reception to that project, Nas shared he’s planning to release another album in the near future.
In a cover story with VIBE, Swizz Beatz revealed his knowledge of Nas’ pending soundscape and if it’ll become a tangible thing. “That’s his album, so he’s gotta address that. I think it’s happening, he’s speaking positively about it but that’s like something he gotta answer back because he might change his mind,” Swizz said. “But he’s in the musical zone, he’s got super fire. There’s no reason not to do it. Maybe he wants to do another album, it don’t got to particularly be my album. As long as he’s making music, that’s what I f**k with. I’d like it to be my sh*t, but whenever that man’s got a plan, I let him do his thing.”
Before NASIR‘s debut, the 45-year-old faced Kelis’ claims of domestic abuse. The pair married in 2005 but divorced in 2010. They have one child together. Earlier this year, Kelis laid out various instances where Nas displayed mental and physical rage throughout their relationship. Nas later responded in a lengthy Instagram post and stated that Kelis’ recollection was false.
