Nas is making a political statement with his latest music video. The Queens native dropped the visuals for his single “Cops Shot The Kid” on Monday (Jan. 7).
The nearly three-minute video begins with triggering scenes of a dead body being covered up by a white sheet. Gun shots sound off in the background as police sirens light up at the scene.
Nas then begins to rap about police brutality and the injustices brought against black people. “White kids are brought in alive Black kids get hit with like five / Get scared, you panic, you’re goin’ down / The disadvantages of the brown / How in the hell the parents gon’ bury their own kids / Not the other way around?” Nas spits.
“Cops Shot The Kid” comes from Nas’ 2018 studio album, NASIR. The single samples Slick Rick’s 1988 track “Children’s Story.” The album debuted at number five on the US Billboard 200 with 77,000 album-equivalent units and 49,000 were pure album sales.
