Mark Ronson premiered the new Beyonce and Andre 3000 collaboration, “Back to Black,” on his East Village Radio show on Friday night. It’s fitting, considering that Ronson co-wrote the song, originally performed — and the title track — by the late Amy Winehouse, off her seminal 2006 album. The Bey 3000 version of “Back to Black” will be featured on the soundtrack to The Great Gatsby, dropping on May 7.
Ronson says he’s “flattered and honored” by the cover. “I know Amy would be too,” the producer alleges. Someone who’s not so keen on the collabo? Winehouse’s father, who earlier this week gave his own critique of the song. “I don’t think she brings anything to it,” Mitch Winehouse said of Beyonce’s vocals.
Beyonce and Andre 3000’s “Back to Black” is a drugged-out slow burner in comparison to the doo-wop original, which boasted Winehouse’s robust vocals. The new version has been garnering mixed reviews. Listen to both below.
