Normani and 6lack are a match made in moody R&B heaven. The two have teamed up for the singer’s latest single, “Waves.”
Speaking with Apple Music’s Beats 1 host Zane Lowe Thursday (Nov. 15), Normani explained how the single came together and her fandom over the “Switch” artist. Normani dubbed 6lack as an important artist, praising his writing style. The song was penned by the two along with Tayla Parx.
Heavy with love-soaked lyrics of a twisted union, “Waves” showcases Normani’s style range, jumping to bubbly dance (“Slow Down” with Calvin Harris) to quiet storm allure with ease.
“I admire him as an artist, and he’s just … he’s amazing,” she said. “He’s an amazing lyricist, and I feel like he took the record to a whole other level. I already love the record as is, but he totally exceeded any expectation I ever had, which was pretty high, because I admire him as an artist. He’s such an important artist, and I’ve been following his journey for a while now, and we’re really big fans of each other. Our text messages pretty much look like we’re complimenting each other.” The song, Normani cited “make love on a full moon” as her favorite lyric.
After a successful year of singles and guest appearances, Normani shared her debut album will be released at the top of 2019. She also explained why her chart-topping single “Love Lies” with Khalid will not appear on the project. “I feel like “Love Lies” was a moment of its own and I want it to remain that,” she said. The single provided the Houston native with her first solo Top 10 single.
When it comes to Fifth Harmony, the singer was happy to look back on their journey.
“We achieved and we did everything that … we exceeded what we were supposed to do,” she explained. “We were a girl group that was manufactured on a reality television show. A lot of the time, the odds were against us and I feel like we fought as best we could, and we accomplished things that people may not have necessarily thought that we would have. I think that we also fought for respect.”
