Omarion decided to surprise his fans by dropping the single “It’s Whatever” on his birthday (Nov.12) and pinpointing his breakup with long-time girlfriend, Apryl Jones.
The 32-year-old artist teamed up with G. Ry, who is known for his work on PartyNextDoor’s sophomore album P3, for production. The track brings listeners into Omarion’s carefree attitude at the moment. With its melodic beat and O’s soothing vocals, his breakup sounds less dramatic than it looks. After starring on Love & Hip Hop Hollywood together and sharing two children, Omarion and Jones ended their relationship shortly after the arrival of their daughter A’mei Kazuko in July.
The singer chose to mention Jones with a problematic title, swearing on the song that he’s torn apart and having less than loving flashbacks. “Torn apart, catch me I’m on the run, told my BM she can have that. Put that on my daughter and my son. Every night I’m having flashbacks.”
Reasons, Omarion’s upcoming album, is set to release early 2017. Jones didn’t seem to appreciate her mention in the song as she took her feelings to social media. The singer stated at the time of the release he’s working on a more meaningful and soulful approach to his next project.
