A new trailer for the controversial ATCQ documtary, Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest has hit the Net. Directed by Michael Rapaport, the flick focuses on the personal struggles of the group, who helped pioneer a new sound in hip-hop, and the 20-year relationship between two of its members, Phife Dawg and Q-Tip.
The documentary contains concert footage and personal interviews from music artists influenced by A Tribe Called Quest, including Common, Ludacris, Beatsie Boys and Pharrell Williams.
Beats, Rhymes & Life has come with a ton of drama. In December 2010, Q-Tip tweeted his frustrations with Rapaport, saying that he “should respect the band enough to honor our request regarding the film.” Since then, Q-Tip said that the Tribe members were removed as producers and refrained from using their ideas for the film.
The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah and is set to release on July 8, 2011. — Aliya Faust
