It was 30 years ago when New York’s pioneering hip-hop trio, Whodini released, “Friends,” a song that still resonates with today’s music landscape.
Fast forward to today, the equally as influential 10-time Grammy nominated, singer-songwriter, vocalist and bassist, Meshell Ndegeocello, is gearing up to release her eleventh album, Comet, Come To Me, on June 3. Riddled with luscious rhythms, steeped in her trademark bounce and clairvoyant bass technique, Ndegeocello hasn’t skipped a beat on the new full-length.
“When I’m writing songs and recording the demos, I’m having my own awesome experience in my attic, or on a plane, or in a hotel room, just making my beats on my laptop. Then I get together with these people that I have an intimate musical relationship with, and we bring the songs to life,” Ndegeocello explains her process.
The first track on Comet, Come To Me, is a meditative jazzy cover of Whodini’s “Friends” that serves as a fitting kickoff to the sonic adventure to follow.
