Ever wondered what a collaboration between Kendrick Lamar and Prince would sound like? Well your prayers have been answered. Footage of the aforementioned artists’ never-before-seen performance popped up on the Internet earlier this week.
Lamar and The Purple One took center stage at the late singer’s Paisley Park estate for an album release celebration of Prince’s Plectrumelectrum and Art Official Age projects back in 2014. According to MTV, K. Dot and the musical icon did a live rendition of Prince’s 1998 melody “What’s My Name.”
In a feature on Grammy.com on the oral history of Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly album, he shared that Prince nearly appeared on his track “Complexion (A Zulu Love),” but time got the best of them and weren’t able to finalize the joint venture.
“We got to a point where we were just talking in the studio and the more time that passed we realized we weren’t recording anything,” said Lamar. “We just ran out of time, it’s as simple as that.”
Nonetheless, check out Prince and the Compton native light up the stage below.
