In late-2014, a divine studio session between Kendrick Lamar and the legendary Prince made headlines, and now, K.Dot is finally giving up some information on that special meeting.
The Grammys website is offering “The Oral History” of To Pimp A Butterfly, the rapper’s third studio album, which could possibly win “Album Of The Year” on Monday, Feb. 15 at the 58th annual ceremony. Lamar, Derek “MixedByAli” Ali, Sounwave, Terrace Martin, Thundercat and Rapsody sat down and discussed how the album came to be, and Kendrick revealed the nature of Prince and his almost feature on “Complexion (A Zulu Love).”
“Prince heard the record, loved the record and the concept of the record got us to talking,” said Kendrick. However, this exceptional meeting of the minds remained just that, as it was discovered that they ran out of time and couldn’t use Prince in the song.
“We got to a point where we were just talking in the studio and the more time that passed we realized we weren’t recording anything. We just ran out of time, it’s as simple as that.”
The two have a mutual admiration of each other. Last year, The Purple One revealed that he was a fan of Lamar’s “Alright,” and the two performed Prince’s “What’s My Name” from his Crystal Ball box set in 2014.
