Questlove has defended Iggy Azalea in a new interview with Time magazine, calling “Fancy” a game-changer for hip hop. He also labelled it the song of the summer. The Roots drummer, who is producing a new live music TV show called SoundClash for VH1, was asked about the avalanche of criticism leveled against the Australian rap diva for everything from her accent to alleged appropriation of black culture.
“We as black people have to come to grips that hip-hop is a contagious culture,” he said about Iggy’s eight week stint at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. “I will say that ‘Fancy,’ above any song that I’ve ever heard or dealt with, is a game-changer in that fact that we’re truly going to have to come to grips with the fact that hip-hop has spread its wings.”
