There’s a new methodology in the music industry that is going to boost a lot of artists’ ranks. The RIAA CEO, Cary Sherman, recently announced that the agency has lifted its 30-day waiting period for an album’s eligibility for certification. Under this new rule, RIAA will count streaming when tracking album sales.
While recent albums including Rihanna’s ANTI have already reaped the benefits of the new rule, raking in 13 million streams as part of its platinum status, there are a number of artists who are getting bumped to gold and platinum levels.
The new change welcomes 17 more albums and artists to the club, including highly acclaimed albums such as Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly and Big Sean’s Dark Sky Paradise, both of which are now platinum. And even better news for The Weeknd and Michael Jackson, their respective albums, Beauty Behind The Madness and Thriller have been moved up to 2x platinum and 32x diamond, respectively.
Under this policy streaming will not be counted individually. RIAA recognizes every 1,500 audio or video streams as 10 equivalent sales. With this new rule, there’s expected to be an additional group of artists added to the platinum wall of fame.
