Things got real on Hot 97’s morning show when Riff Raff stopped by yesterday (May 23). Accusing the Houston rapper of representing “a stereotype of a certain type of black person,” program director Ebro questions the authenticity of Riff Raff’s image, putting in question his aesthetic, and probing him or whether it was “serious or a costume.”
Sharing that he grew up listening to the likes of Swisha House, Slim Thug and Paul Wall, Riff Raff proceeded to defend his music and look for the skeptic Ebro.
“These tattoos, these aren’t stickers,” he explained. “And my money, my jewels, the reason I get back-to-back chains with diamonds and stuff […] If somebody’s playing around, what they’re gonna do is maybe go to the middle of the mall, buy some duplicate chains that they think someone else would buy. Me, all my songs, 90 videos, all original songs, all original beats. Now am I flamboyant? Am I over the top? Maybe.”
Referring to the low-income motivations behind hip-hop’s blinged out lifestyle, the Hot 97 host took his analysis a step further by questioning Riff Raff’s background and whether or not the rapper grew up in poverty.
“So now I’m being grilled on my past? Let me tell you, I dropped out of school. I’m not a pity story, that’s the thing,” Riff Raff responded. “That’s the whole thing about where I come from and what I do. When you have people constantly telling you ‘You ain’t shit,’ like how you coming at me with that. You think I haven’t been through this before? I got constant shit coming at me from all angles.”
Though he refused to grant the specifics on his early days (he claims to be saving the details for a book), Riff Raff assured Ebro that while he is not a parody, he does intend to enjoy himself, to which the Hot 97 host showed a bit of respect.
“I’m looking to have fun and not have nothing negative around me at all times,” he said. “But I want a lot of money, I want a lot of women, I want a lot of drugs around me. I wanna have fun.”
Following the interview, Riff Raff took to his Twitter for a mini-rant:
