It all started earlier this month when the French leg of Def Jam accidentally tweeted,”Nouvelle annonce ce jeudi a propos de Rihanna sur notre compte.” Fans and media got on Google Translate and were quick to deduce that a new album was on the way, exactly a year following the release of Talk That Talk. (Since 2005’s Music of the Sun, the singer has been releasing one album a year, with the exception of 2008 which saw her on the road promoting her most successful album to date, 2007’s Good Girl Gone Bad.)
News of the Diamonds World Tour followed, and over the weekend Rihanna revealed backstage at the iHeartRadio Music Festival that the new album’s first single, dropping this Wednesday (Sept. 26), would also be titled “Diamonds.” Things were slowly starting to connect.
The next piece of the puzzle came today when Rihanna announced a new website for the album, www.rihanna7.com, in a series of tweets. On the webpage, her “R” logo is made up of a collage of words believed to be song titles and lyrics off her next album. In addition to “Diamonds,” some of the other graffiti includes “What’s Love Without a Tragedy,” “Just Want to Be Found,” “Complete Woman,” “I Want You to Stay,” “Chapter 7” and lots of shout-outs to her fanbase aka Rihanna Navy. However two things stuck out, the words “Isis” and larger print “Love Now.”
“Isis” appears twice and has been an obsession for the singer lately. “Isis” is known in Egyptian mythology as “The Female of the Throne.” Wikipedia states the goddess was “worshipped as the ideal mother and wife as well as the patron of nature and magic. She was the friend of slaves, sinners, artisans, and the downtrodden, and she listened to the prayers of the wealthy, maidens, aristocrats, and rulers.”
Rihanna recently got a large tattoo inked across her lower chest of the ancient goddess and spread the news of her new tatt with a tweet that read: “Goddess Isis – Complete Woman – Model for future generations – #GRANGRANDOLLY – always in and on my heart.” (#GRANGRANDOLLY being a shout out to her late grandmother Dolly who passed away this summer.)
Rihanna has also taken the “Isis” concept to the stage, both performing from a throne at the VMAs and riding in on a ship when she helped close the London Paralympics alongside Coldplay and Jay-Z.
We’re just sayin’ all this fuss about “Isis” would make sense when it comes to an album title for Rihanna’s seventh studio album. And when you put into play, Rihanna’s Good Girl Gone Bad street cred, revealing an album title by way of a subtle tattoo would be a first in the pop star world. But, then again, there are a million and one other possibilities too. A nod to her beloved fanbase i.e. “My Navy” is also long overdue.
The guessing game is fun. Give it a try. What do you think Rihanna’s new album will be called?
