Rihanna joins the list of celebrities who have sent Donald Trump a cease-and-desist letter for using her songs during his raucous rallies. This comes a week after producer Pharrell Williams sent 45 a cease-and-desist for playing “Happy” during a rally on the same day as a mass shooting.
“As you are or should be aware, Ms. Fenty has not provided her consent to Mr. Trump to use her music. Such use is therefore improper,” the letter reads, per Rolling Stone. “Trump’s unauthorized use of Ms. Fenty’s music… creates a false impression that Ms. Fenty is affiliated with, connected to or otherwise associated with Trump,” the letter continues.
The singer recently became aware that 45 played her song “Don’t Stop The Music” off of Good Girl Gone Bad during a rally, thanks to a tweet from Washington Post reporter, Philip Rucker.
“Trump’s rallies are unlike anything else in politics,” he wrote. “Currently, Rihanna’s ‘Don’t Stop the Music’ is blaring in Chattanooga as aides toss free Trump T-shirts into the crowd, like a ball game.” Rihanna quote tweeted the reporter and wrote that the use of her music during his rallies will not be happening again.
“Not for much longer…me nor my people would ever be at or around one of those tragic rallies, so thanks for the heads up Philip!” she wrote.
Rihanna also recently send her support to Florida gubernatorial candidate, Andrew Gillum.
“If you’re tired of feeling like you don’t matter in the political process, know the most important thing you can do in supporting a candidate is finding someone who will take on critical issues…” she wrote in an Instagram caption supporting Gillum.
