For all of August 2018, it seems as if everyone is in full celebratory mode to honor Lauryn Hill‘s crowning glory, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. That is, everyone except Robert Glasper. The Grammy and Emmy Award-winning R&B artist has particularly strong thoughts on the legacy of Hill’s career and how it has played out into the present.
During a recent sit-down with The Madd Hatta Morning Show on 97.9 The Box to promote his new group August Greene, Glasper let his critiques for Hill, who he considers an egotistical artist, fly freely. He voiced that the “Ex-Factor” singer not only mistreats her working musicians and future hires. “She likes to fire bands. I can rattle off 15 guys off the top of my head,” he said. “She will go on tour with a band, and in the city where they’re doing their show, she will hold auditions for her band […] The band is always good. She gets the best musicians. She just has a thing.”
Later in the chat, Glasper shared the more jarring accusation that she stole some of the production from other musicians to make Miseducation, therefore she doesn’t deserve the full glowing credit she’s received for the past 20 years. “The one thing you did that was great, you didn’t do,” he said.
Yikes. Aside from the Lauryn Hill rant, Glasper’s day has also been busy because he announced his month-long residency at New York City’s Blue Note Jazz Club starting in October. The series of 24 nights and 48 shows will also welcome guests like Bilal, Terrace Martin, Christian McBride and many more. Until that rolls around, check out all his strong thoughts on Ms. Lauryn Hill below.
