Singer Robin Thicke, whose 2009 LP Sex Therapy: The Session was an instant mood setter, became one of the top hashtags the day JT released his Timbaland-produced single. The digital hemisphere was scrolling with reactions of the two light-skinned soul singers sounding like the other.
VIBE TV caught up with ‘The Real Husbands of Hollywood’ star to get his thoughts on the ex-boy bander’s comeback hit and their comparisons. “I like the song,” says Thicke, rocking shades. “The thing about Justin and I is that we’re inspired by a lot of the same singers – Marvin Gaye, Al Green, Stevie Wonder – so when you’re inspired by the same masters, sometimes you’re gonna make certain songs that sound alike but I like the record. It grooves.”
“Suit & Tie” marked Timberlake’s long-awaited return since 2006’s pristine effort FutureSex/LoveSounds that sparked a tour, HBO special and cemented the genius partnership between him and veteran beatmaker Timbo. While the Justified crooner has racked up a long list of collaborations including Clipse, Pharrell, Beyoncé and Jay-Z, could Thicke be next up on the hit list?
“Oh I don’t know. There’s just too much whiteness in one video,” says Thicke with a smile. “The good thing is that there’s room for everybody’s greatness to be realized and appreciated. That’s what I enjoy.”
