Sam Smith merited a few raised eyebrows and maybe some rolling of the eyes after friend Adam Lambert recorded the Grammy award winner admitting he doesn’t like Michael Jackson’s music.
The two were seen soaking up some sun on a boat when Lambert panned over to Smith who can be seen saying “I don’t like Michael Jackson, but this is a good song.” The clip ended right after with a few friends not seen replying “wow.”
It’s not every day you hear someone admit to not enjoying Michael Jackson’s musical catalog, especially a musician, and when the video made the rounds, it didn’t take long for the internet to do what it usually does.
Sam Smith is over. What self respecting musician says they don’t like Michael Jackson? Honey..

Yes Sam Smith can have his opinion, of course. But you can’t just say “I don’t like Michael Jackson”, you have to say “I’m very sorry but Michael Jackson’s songs aren’t my fave.” That’s it. Pay some respect to the ultimate LEGEND and forever #1 of billions. pic.twitter.com/jLsyBx8uva

Mr. Smith hasn’t responded to the mix reactions over his comment, and if he’s smart, he’ll let the conversation blow over on its own.
However, a larger conversation bubbled on social media after Smith’s comments about the King of Pop. Is it sacrilegious for any artist to not like a legend’s music? While Sam Smith has achieved his own success, is it mandated for new artists to love the work of past artists?
