
Prince’s death shocked the world, but it hit his former lover Sheila E. in a major way. The singer/drummer was in the process of recording a dance album when she received the news about her ex-fiancé’s death in April. Driven by a sense of loss, the singer began writing an entire album influenced by her relationship with the late, iconic singer.

“I decided to write a whole new album. And it feels right,” she said of the upcoming project titled Girl Meets Boy, her first since the 2013 debut of Sheila E.: Icon.
Sheila E. will also join Janelle Monae, Roots and D’Angelo in paying tribute to Prince at the BET Awards on June 26. “I wasn’t sure I could do it even though I said yes,” she told Billboard. “It’s actually been a part of my healing now, trying to figure out what I was going to play and what would be okay to make sure I would get through it. But it’s going to be fun.”
