It was a big year for the “Whip/Nae Nae” rapper, Silento. Not only did his single take over pop culture, including making cameos on Dancing with the Stars and on Instagram with Riley Curry adorably mimicking the dance, but it also earned him $100,000. And now that payday is going to get a lot sweeter as the 17-year-old has just signed a contract with Capitol Records.
The video for the single went viral in June and even after its summer debut, the single gained 500 million views on YouTube, and that number continues to grow. In addition to its growing views, the single held its weight on the charts, competing for the top spot against The Weeknd. At one point back in September, Silento managed to outrun The Weeknd’s “Can’t Feel My Face” for the number one seat on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip Hop singles.
Some might be calling this a one-hit wonder, but it looks like Capitol Records thinks the rapper can inspire another set of dances in the future. The record deal includes, along with a big paycheck, provisions for four albums. It’s projected that Silento will bring in anywhere from $50,000to $500,000 in sales for his debut project. Only time will tell if he will deliver on those numbers. But in the meantime, Silento is just soaking in the newly signed success.
