Solange Knowles returned to the stage at the FYF Festival on Sunday (Aug. 23), and along with her hit tunes, she also performed a classic Nina Simone melody titled “To Be Young, Gifted And Black.”
Alongside Dev Hynes, the trio King, and Moses Sumney, the collective brought back to life the 1969 tune. The “Losing You” singer also hinted at new music, which she said will be arriving soon.

In a revealing post on her Instagram account, Solange noted her attachment to the Nina Simone record, stating she sang this song at the age of nine in her native hometown of Houston. She also highlighted the obstacles she had to defeat during her performance.
“I had one of the hardest shows I’ve ever had last night, and was really beating myself up about it, doing way too much, but after watching this video I truly feel proud to say in this moment I felt so young, gifted and black, something I for so long felt like I should never say out loud. I am so forever grateful for the moments I got to sing these words with such beautiful people, in front of such beautiful people.”
