Spice Girls member Melanie Brown – better known as Mel B – is reportedly headed to rehab for alcohol and sex addictions, The Sun, reports. The decision to seek help for her personal troubles arose after certain demons were revived while working on her upcoming book Brutally Honest.
“The past six months have been incredibly difficult for me,” she told the British tabloid. “[Writing the book] has been unbelievably traumatic reliving an emotionally abusive relationship and confronting so many massive issues in my life.”
Brown, who is also a judge on America’s Got Talent, was also recently diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of her divorce from her ex Stefan Belafonte. Brown and Belafonte reportedly finalized their divorce in 2017 after ten years of marriage. For the past couple of years, the two have been in and out of the court room. Brown previously accused her ex-husband of physical and emotional abused, while Belafonte claimed she was addicted to drugs.
While she did not admit to abusing drugs, she stated that she frequently turned to alcohol to dull out the noise regarding her failed marriage and alleged abuse. “Sometimes it is too hard to cope with all the emotions I feel,” she said. “But the problem has never been about sex or alcohol – it is underneath all that. I am fully aware I have been at a crisis point. No one knows myself better than I do – but I am dealing with it.”
The news comes shortly after the Spice Girls announced they would be reuniting for a 13-date tour through the United Kingdom in 2019. Scary (Brown), Sporty (Emma Bunton), and Baby (Geri Halliwell) will all be hitting the road, with the exception of its final member Posh Spice (Victoria Beckham). Brown’s rehab stint will not likely affect their tour schedule however.
Brown will voluntarily check herself into a rehabilitation center in England in Sept. 2018.
