Knight, wearing an orange prison jumpsuit with his hands and legs handcuffed sat stoically during the reading. However, when the judge ordered him to stand and gave a few instructions the 53-year-old reportedly stared at members of the courtroom for a few uncomfortable sentences before being taken away to serve his 28 years.
Knight has been in prison since 2015 after fatally running over Terry Carter on the set of Straight Outta Compton. Footage of the fatal incident was captured and helped seal his fate.
On Sept. 20, TMZ reported Knight struck a deal with prosecutors and would serve 28 years after pleading no contest to voluntary manslaughter. The sentence was harsher than usual due to Knight’s past run-ins with the law including a 1997 felony.
The judge added an extra five years because Carter’s death was deemed “a serious and violent felony” and another year because the car used to run over Carter was categorized as a deadly weapon. It’s unclear where Knight will serve his time, but due to prison overcrowding, he could be out in as little more than 10 years.
