Suge Knight is suing Chris Brown over a 2014 shooting that left the onetime rap mogul with seven bullets wounds.
Knight filed the lawsuit Monday (June 27) in a Los Angeles Superior Court, according to the Associated Press. The lawsuit claims 1 Oak nightclub failed to take proper security measures during a MTV VMA pre-party hosted by Brown.
The 51-year-old Compton native, who is currently awaiting trial on murder charges, asserts that Brown has a “well-documented track record of hosting events and/or parties in which violence frequently erupted.”
The suit also claims Brown has gang ties. “As a result of the negligence of the defendants, one or more unknown individuals were allowed access to the event with weapons, including firearms,” states the suit. “As a foreseeable result, gunshots were fired by those admitted into the event and [Knight[ was shot and seriously injured.”
Brown has yet to comment on Knight’s suit, which is the latest legal action brought against the singer after an ex-manger sued over an alleged physical attack.
Knight wants Brown to cover his previous and current medical expenses, though it’s unclear if he is seeking additional compensation.
He was one of three people shot that night, sustaining hits to the abdomen, arm, and chest. Less than six months later, Knight was arrested for running over and killing 55-year-old Terry Carter following a confrontation at a Compton burger joint.
Lawyers for Knight assert that the Death Row Records founder was “extremely frail from his gunshot injuries” when he mowed Carter down in self-defense. “When the facts are finally revealed in this case, we’re certain it will be apparent that our client was simply trying to flee for his life,” attorney J. Toosen said in a statement.
As far as the suit goes, Knight has been down this road before. He sued Kanye West over a 2005 VMA party shooting, but reached an out-of-court settlement with the rapper in 2011.
