Three hundred and sixty-five days ago, Chance The Rapper, Donnie Trumpet and The Social Experiment demonstrated their charitable side with the release of Surf. The freebie project proved to be a sorely needed breath of fresh air for the musical landscape, and spawned fan favorites such as “Wanna Be Cool” Sunday Candy” and “Rememory.” To commemorate the epic day in music, Donnie Trumpet released an unheard track Sunday (May 29) via Soundcloud that didn’t make the project.
“First Time” is a potent helping of what Surf fans experienced, fell in love with, and held close as they deep-dived into the lyrical content. The 11 minute track seamlessly rides rhythm and waves as it transitions from moods, and sounds and textures within those sounds.
The release of the unheard track is just a few days removed from Lil Chano’s well received Coloring Book. While the collaborators haven’t mentioned a follow up to Surf, hearing “First Time” is a wonderful reminder of how dope the project was.
