Tamela and David Mann are taking a break from making gospel music venturing into R&B music on with their new Christmas album Us Against the World.
On Thursday (Dec. 13), the gospel and acting couple spoke with The Christian Post about their album, which was released on Dec. 9, and discussed what they hope their fans will get out of it.
Tamela, who topped the Billboard Gospel Charts twice throughout career, said that she was hesitant about tapping into a new genre in her 25+ years in the industry.
“It was different for me, it was really different, even though I was happy to think about the man that I love [while singing],” Tamela confessed. “It made me even look at him differently, and in all honesty, we tested it out and it really worked.”
The couple also emphasized that they want this to be an album for couples to make love to. “It’s making baby music,” David added. “This album was one that we wanted to give to our people because when you’re having those intimate moments, you know we listening to something.”
He continued: “You know that our love for each other is 30 years strong and growing. So we wanted to make music that people can have those intimate moments with and not listen and be like, ‘girl, let me slap you, bump you, pop you.’ All of that stuff.”
The two Texas natives met each other when they were teenagers through Tamela’s close friend and would sing together in their church. Eventually, their friendship turned into a romantic one and kept it an amour, later tying the knot in 1988.
Their album debuted on the Gospel Charts at No. 3. It’s lead single, “Good Love,” currently occupies the No. 22 spot on the Adult Urban Contemporary Charts.
