Taylor Swift is defending two of music’s biggest artists who are always at the center of a songwriting debate.
The “Shake It Off” singer said Nicki Minaj and Iggy Azalea shouldn’t have to constantly prove that they pen their own lyrics. In an interview with TIME, the Pop superstar said, “I see Nicki Minaj and Iggy Azalea having to prove that they write their own raps or their own lyrics, and it makes me sad, because they shouldn’t have to justify it.”
Swift also mentioned that female artists within in the music industry always have to go above and beyond to show critics they are the masterminds behind their hit records. “It’s a little discouraging that females have to work so much harder to prove that they do their own things,” she said.
Both rappers have come under public fire for allegedly having ghostwriters, which Minaj spoke out against at the 2014 BET Awards stating, “What I want the world to know about Nicki Minaj,” she said, “when you hear Nicki Minaj spit, Nicki Minaj wrote it.” Others also speculated that T.I. penned a few verses for Iggy, which he vehemently denied in an interview with Bijou Star TV expressing, “Iggy got her own ideas and thoughts that she presents to the world her own way. I couldn’t write a lot of the shit she say, you know? I couldn’t put her thoughts into words as articulate as she does.”
