The Birth of a Nation is an emotion stirring film about slave Nat Turner and other black Virginia slaves wanting their freedom.
The Nate Parker-directed movie hits theaters on Oct. 6, but today (Sept. 30), the movie’s soundtrack has made its way online. The 16-track project features the likes of Vic Mensa, Nas, The Game, Wale, Meek Mill, Gucci Mane and Lil Wayne, among others.
Nat Turner was a literate Baptist preacher living on a Virginia plantation. Turner’s “owner” Samuel Tuner was paid to have Nat preach to slaves telling them to obey their masters. This would hopefully kill any ideas about a slave insurrection. However, Nat received revelations that he should rebel against slave owners, resulting in the Southampton County slave revolt on Aug. 21, 1831.
Also, Parker has been the topic of a rape case that happened back in 1999. He was then a 19-year-old college student. While The Birth of a Nation is an important film for our culture, we must not take lightly the traumatizing situation that the young lady, who committed suicide, experienced.
