Tiffany Evans, who first broke out in 2008 with the viral single “Promise Ring,” continues to push the envelope as an adult urban R&B artist who knows what she wants.
On Friday (Nov. 9), the 26-year-old released her new single “Switch Up.” The single, premiered on Billboard, marks her return to the music spotlight since her 2015 EP All Me, which climbed to the top 10 of the iTunes R&B Albums Chart and saw her collaborate with then-rising star Fetty Wap.
Evans, who now rocks fiery red hair a la Rihanna circa 2010, spoke to the music magazine about the concept behind the trap-influenced breakup anthem. “’Switch Up’ is another way of me saying ‘f**k you’ to an ex. It took me so long to finally say, ‘I can’t do this anymore. I’m going out tonight and going to kick it with someone who’s going to show me a good time,'” she said.
“Most of the song was freestyled because I was going through so much, that it made it easy for me to express what I was feeling,” the Bronx native continued. “This is just the beginning of what I’ll be singing about on my new project. The music is definitely more raw and vulnerable compared to my past work.”
The former Star Search contestant worked on the song alongside the production group The Assembly, whose credits also include Da Brat, DJ Luke Nasty and Kirko Bangz. Evans is currently in the studio finalizing her upcoming project, which is tentatively set for an early 2019 release.
