From rap music’s present chart-toppers like Lil’ Wayne and Drake to old school artists like Ice T, rappers continue to form their own festivals for the culture. That’s the case for Travis Scott who will probably make his Astroworld production an annual event for music lovers.
Nearly a week after the thirteenth anniversary of the closing of Six Flags’ amusement park in Houston, the 26-year-old rapper announced the news of his festival’s return via the event’s official website: “Thank You, Houston, See You Next Year.”
On Nov. 17, the first Astroworld fest took place at H-town’s NRG Park. It’s named after an amusement park in the city that shut down in 2005 when Scott was a teenager. His fest boasted more than 40,000 fans, Page Six reports.
When the Astroworld Festival was announced for a comeback in August around the release of his third album (of the same name), his manager David Stromberg said to Billboard that their goal was to “bring some well-deserved recognition to Travis’ hometown of Houston, the place that has made him both the man and creative artist he is today.”
The manager also added that “H-Town has an incredible rich cultural history, and we look forward to showcasing to residents from Travis’ own backyard and across the globe what makes this city so special.”
Scott is currently on his Astroworld Tour — separate from the festival — as his album currently sits at No. 7 on the Billboard 200. He recently earned his first Top 5 single as a lead artist with “Sicko Mode.”
