This spring, New York City will be getting a little taste of that west coast flare. The Powamekka Cafe, a pop-up restaurant inspired by rap legend Tupac Shakur, is coming to NYC’s Lower East Side this weekend, and fans will reportedly be able to dine and check out some original artifacts.
The restaurant, which is being housed at the southern-style eatery Sweet Chick, was reportedly conceived from three handwritten pages of Tupac’s personal notebook written 20 years ago, the pop-up’s website states. The menu will consist of family recipes, including meatloaf, gumbo, and his cousin Jamala’s fried chicken wings — one of Pac’s favorite meals. And while they eat, visitors will also get a glimpse of the past with a “carefully curated” collection from his archives of childhood photos, poetry, music memorabilia, and other artifacts.
“A place for all to play and parlay, the Powamekka Café, representing the finest in down home Southern, will serve as a place for friends and family to get together and escape the world’s cold reality,” the website states.
The Powamekka Cafe previously popped up in California’s Fulton Mall back in September 2016. It’s New York location will officially open on April 7. It will be open for a limited time only however, closing its doors on April 9. Space is limited, so do yourself a favor and make a reservation on the restaurant website here.
