DJ Dainjazone has spent the last year on the road with LMFAO as the “Party Rock Anthem” duo’s tour DJ. Last month the group announced their indefinite hiatus, but the LA-based Dainjazone tells VIBE a bright future still lies ahead. The DJ, who is currently finishing up a world tour with LMFAO’s Red Foo and the Party Rock Crew, dishes to VIBE about the future of LMFAO and his own upcoming projects, inspirations and favorite places to party.
VIBE: What have you learned from being on the road with LMFAO’s Redfoo and SkyBlu?
I’ve learned how to work a crowd and be more confident in my stage presence. This is a serious business but they stayed loose and had fun on the side.
??What is it like on tour with the “Party Rock Crew” and to have the support of LMFAO?
There is never a dull moment. There is always a story being shared of what happened last night and how drunk each person was. Our parties are like no other when we takeover a club, people get drunk, and put on a show. We become the life of the party even when we’re not booked to perform we always show up and entertain.
Do you have a crazy fan stalker story?
Thank God I don’t have any of those stories. Nothing serious at least. Just a lot of Twitter love.??
Who parties the hardest?
Hard to say. Sky will go hard when hip-hop is being played and Foo will go hard when house music is played. Q, our lead hypeman, parties equally as hard, if not harder. ??
Can you name a few of your creative influences?
Kanye West might be the biggest influence. To him life is more than the music, it involves art and fashion and he injects art into his music. Mark Ronson’s last album inspired the look of my website, my style and fashion as well. The album gave me direction and I haven’t looked back. You can buy a plethora of high end materials, accessories, clothes, throw it together like everyone else does and call it a day, but that’s not art to me. Kanye and Mark put their twist on it and then it becomes art. Art is originality that can’t be explained and there’s no mathematical formula that can pinpoint a rhyme or reason to it. That’s what inspires me. ??
Can you set the record straight for us on the “breakup” of LMFAO?
They aren’t broken up. Both have solo projects and non-music related interest they want to focus on. If you haven’t been watching ESPN, Foo is heavy in the tennis world.??
Do you have a favorite spot to spin at?
Marquee in Las Vegas. It’s one of the newer clubs and our party that happens one Monday a month is the best party in the world. The Party Rockers and the crowd come dressed and ready to rage with us. The club is gorgeous and the atmosphere is nothing short of live.??
What about a favorite place to party?
Las Vegas. You can go to four clubs in one night. Good looking girls are everywhere and some of the most talented DJs in the world are performing.??
What’s the craziest thing that you’ve seen or done while on tour?
Seeing the fans lose their minds for us is always an amazing feeling.??
What do you like to do when you have some downtime?
Read, exercise, work on up-and-coming projects, researching music, art and fashion.
What separates you from other DJs out right now?
I don’t focus on what other DJs are doing. I focus on what works for me, challenge myself and do my best to reach my potential. In the midst of my sets and mixes I focus on being creative and telling a story. I want to take you somewhere; give you direction and guidance. It all makes sense and when it doesn’t make sense. It’s so extreme that it does make sense, if that makes sense. ??
Who are you listening to in your ipod… any non-EDM?
A majority of what I listen to is non-EDM. The Weeknd stays in heavy rotation. His music is timeless, inspiring and genius. Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music album is currently on repeat. I love mixtapes so I stay up on the latest hip-hop. I enjoy listening to club DJ mixes since I think a mix is an outlet to put all their creativity and best ideas on the table since everyone can’t make it out to their live DJ sets.
??If you could choose one rapper and one DJ to collaborate with, who would it be?
Kanye West for reasons I explained earlier. DJ Spryte is my favorite club DJ and a close friend. He is arguably the best club DJ in the country. He never gets lazy and will freak out if his sets lack creativity. Doing a mix with him would be fun.??
Are they emerging young DJs you’re feeling?
There’s a group called Project Spin Artist (PSA) based in LA. They have some of the better up and coming DJs in each DJs respective scene. J. Espinosa, MikiWAR, Rell, and Eddie Boy are a few names from the group that catch my ear. I’m feeling their movement as well as their business ethics and vision.??
What’s next for DJ Dainjazone? What are your plans for after the tour?
After tour I plan on getting more involved in my brand, and I recently signed to NTA, a talent agency in Hollywood. I will continue to DJ in clubs but I’m more excited about my new adventures.
