Every week leading up to Electric Zoo 2012, VIBE will introduce you to a banger-producing-party-inducing DJ that will make Randalls Island shake like a polaroid picture on speed come Labor Day Weekend.
First on the Decks: Laidback Luke
Filipino-Dutch DJ Luke van Scheppingen, better known as Laidback Luke, has been heating up the EDM scene for years. Now that summer is in full swing, Luke might burst into flames with his latest, Madonna vs Laidback Luke feat Far East Movement “Turn up the Radio”. His Super You&Me parties (super-hero themed and out of this world), have bumped up the BPMs of fun within the Laidback Luke experience (yes, his name was inspired by Snoop’s “Gin n’ Juice”). Guests on his tour include Datsik, Tommy Trash, Oliver Twizt and more. Peep him at Electric Zoo on Friday, August 31st.

VIBE: Describe your sonic style for an EDM novice in one sentence:
Laidback Luke: A powerful, energetic and fun style of dance music, and including a wide range of genres and styles.
What does being on the lineup at Electric Zoo mean to you?
I’m very happy to be back again as I get so much love and support from New York. It’s definetely the New York dance music festival to perform at.
Who do you draw inspiration from?
-DJ: Gaslamp Killer, DJ AM
-Singer: Bob Marley, Sting back in the day
-Hip-Hop Artist: Timbaland, N.E.R.D, Missy Elliot
-Band: Miike Snow, Phoenix
If you could choose any artist in the world (living) to collaborate with on a track who would it be?
Justin Timberlake, Timbaland or Daft Punk.
Who are you listening to you on your iPod right now?
Luke: I just started listening to the new Hot Chip album. But my iPod is very empty to be honest. Being busy with music 24/7 makes me want to enjoy silence whenever I can.
Finish this sentence: “Electric Zoo is a festival that……”
brings the New York energy and it’s a pleasure to being able to tap into that when I perform.
