Cardi B is an undisputed star, and her ascension continued on Sunday night with her winning Best Rap Album at the 2019 Grammys (Feb. 10).
Invasion of Privacy beat out Mac Miller’s Swimming, Nipsey Hussle’s Victory Lap, Pusha T’s Daytona, and Travis Scott’s Astroworld – stiff competition for the Bronx stripper and reality star-turned-musician’s debut. Her victory made her the first woman rap artist to win Rap Album of the Year.
After accepting the award from presenters Chloe x Halle, a teary-eyed Cardi B walked up to the stage with husband Offset as audience members chanted her name. She thanked record execs and collaborators by name, then shouted out her daughter while explaining the challenge of completing the album while pregnant.
“I want to thank my daughter. I’m not just saying thank you because she’s my daughter. When I found out I was pregnant, my album was not complete,” Cardi revealed. I had three songs that I was for sure having. We was like, we have to get this album done so I can shoot these videos while I’m still not showing. It was very long nights.”
She also acknowledged Offset, who stood by as she gave her speech.
“You, husband, thank you,” she said. “Seriously, he was like, ‘you gon do this album, girl.’ We gon have this baby and we gon make this album.”
While Cardi B’s onstage acceptance speech was cut short by the wrap-it-up music, she gave an uncensored speech with her sister Hennessy Carolina, Quality Control Founder Pee Thomas, and Offset. She thanked friends, family, fans, and mentioned Mac Miller, who died in September 2018.
“I read an article that said that Mac Miller’s family said that if he don’t win, they want me to win, so I’m sharing this Grammy with you. Rest in peace!” she shouted. In a subsequent post, she showed a link to the story in US Magazine, that had the headline “Mac Miller’s Family Is ‘Rooting For Cardi B’ If He Doesn’t Win At The Grammys.”
Cardi B also gave a sultry onstage performance at the Grammys, and received nominations for Record of the Year (“I Like It”), Album of the Year, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance (“Girls Like You” with Maroon 5), and Best Rap Performance (“Be Careful”).
