Janelle Monae completely obliterated the 61st Grammy Awards stage on Sunday (Feb. 10). The singer performed her hit single “Make Me Feel.”
Monae came out in a black and white ensemble. She sang along to the track, which many deemed to be a Prince-inspired “bi-sexual anthem,” while playing the guitar and delivering powerful choreography with her backup dancers. The performance also broke down into a freestyle that celebrated black girl magic.
“Make Me Feel” comes from her critically-acclaimed studio album, Dirty Computer. The album debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard 200 chart, opening with 54,000 album units sold in its first week.
Monae is nominated for all of two Grammys this year. Her LP is in the running for Album of the year, while she was also nominated for Best Music Video for her single “Pynk.” The video, which was released in 2018, appears to celebrate all aspects of womanhood. Th video was trending on social media, thanks to a pair of pants that appeared to mimic a woman’s vagina.
