Earlier this week, news broke that famed filmographer Nick Broomfield was gearing up to direct a Whitney Houston biopic. The lens will depict the rise and fall of the “I Will Always Love You” vocalist’s life and career.
The news received mixed messages from readers, and even called into question Houston’s family’s thoughts on the project. Now, in a statement issued to Rolling Stone, the famed singer’s family reveals, “The Whitney Houston Estate has no involvement in this program whatsoever.”
When Lifetime’s rendition, starring Yaya DeCosta, premiered in 2015, Houston’s sister-in-law, Pat Houston, stated, “You should not be surprised that someone decided to do a made-for-TV biopic. And, I might add, without the family’s blessing and despite her mother’s request to not do this movie. It happens every day.”
Although a release date has yet to be unveiled, BBC Two gave a little bit of insight into the premise of the biopic, which “goes in search of the forces that made and then destroyed the singer who has been described as having one of the greatest voices of the last 50 years.”
