Yasiin Bey (formerly Mos Def) has clarified his comments about controversial rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine after the rap legend was seen condemning the rapper’s music earlier this week.
In the statement released Thursday (July 26), Bey and A$AP Rocky’s AWGE creative agency explained how Bey’s feedback towards the rapper was taken out of context by way of shoddy editing. AWGE claims an unapproved version of the series was leaked with the Bey-Tekashi edit. The YouTube version features Bey’s comments while the version shared on the AWGE site does not.
“Unbeknownst to Yasiin Bey and the AWGE team, an unapproved version of AWGE DVD: Vol. 3 was leaked and included a clip of Yasiin Bey that was taken out of context and edited in a way that does not accurately depict him or his opinions,” the statement reads. “The leaked clip was not included in the final released version of Vol. 3 from AWGE and does not reflect Yasiin Bey’s feelings on Tekashi 6ix9ine, his work or otherwise.”
Bey added a special message to his fans. “Stop clout wars. Love all, trust few, fear none. Peace.”
The YouTube page that shared the video features a handful of videos dedicated to the A$AP Mob like Rocky’s “Money Bag Freestyle” and visuals for “Crazy Brazy” featuring KEY! and A$AP Twelvyy. Clips of freestyles, A$AP Rocky’s “Potato Salad” video with Tyler the Creator and behind the scenes footage of Kanye West were seen in what was believed to be the official third installment of Rocky’s AWGE DVD docuseries.
Near the 15-minute mark, Bey is seen watching Tekashi69’s “GUMMO” while calling the video, “the most depressing sh*t I’ve ever seen in my life.” The YouTube page that shared the video features a handful of videos dedicated the A$AP Mob like Rocky’s “Money Bag Freestyle” and visuals for “Crazy Brazy” featuring KEY! and A$AP Twelvyy.
