During a surprise guest appearance. Legendary rapper/actor Yasiin Bey, formerly known as Mos Def, performed with Canadian jazz outfit BADBADNOTGOOD at this year’s Cape Town International Jazz Festival. This is following a mix of confusing interactions with the general public.
Bey made headlines earlier this year when he was arrested at the Cape Town International Airport while attempting to leave South Africa using a World Passport. Shortly after, he used good friend Kanye West’s official website to announce his imminent retirement from the music industry — and Hollywood. Bey isn’t going to go out cold though, he plans to put out one final album by the end of 2016.
Although we haven’t heard much about this project since then, it has been said that Bey’s been hitting the studio hard in Cape Town. In May, the rapper began sharing new cuts produced by his longtime collaborator and A Country Called Earth co-founder, Ferrari Sheppard. The track, titled “N.A.W.,” turned out to be the first of Bey and Sheppard’s drops under the moniker Dec 99th.
The Brooklyn born rapper didn’t stop there, he kept rolling out the new songs like “Tall Sleeves,” followed by “Local Time” in June. No one can know for sure what Dec 99th means or when Bey’s final album will drop, or even if it will actually be his final album. However, the rapper posted is seen in a video performing what appears to be a new Dec 99th song titled “Arcade.”
