The hunger for substance in hip-hop has been served on a plate by some of the top solo acts in the game like J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar and Rapsody, but duo Magda Carda is looking to shake things up with their new track, “2 Legit.”
Composed of rapper Megz Kelli and producer Dougie Do, the Austin transplants have adapted the use of actual instruments intertwined with Megz’s silky flows. “2 Legit” holds that premise as Megz’s subtly drops bars about positive energy–or else.
Speaking to VIBE, the group shared how the song came about. “Lately we have been inspired by being on the road more and creating whatever comes to mind,” they shared in a statement.
“With “2 Legit,” we wanted a chill vibe that reels you in while spitting some real on top.”
The chill vibe is warranted, especially with the addition of saxophonist Louk Cox’s solo towards the end.
The duo has also gained the support of fellow lyrical masters The Pharcyde, Raekwon and Joey Badass. Speaking with PopDust in May, Megz explained why they refuse to dumb down their rich content.
“You can’t avoid it and if you are avoiding it, it’s a disservice to the art-form itself because [that’s] what hip-hop is all about,” she said. “It was a way for us to express our grievances or express the things that we weren’t comfortable with or needed to be changed. It’s almost like returning to the roots of where hip-hop was for us, or what poetry was for the black community. Realistically, I don’t have millions of dollars and Balenciaga sneakers and stuff like that. It almost feels fake or phony when I try to ride that lane.”
The band is scheduled to touch down in New York Friday (July 13). They’re also working on their upcoming EP.
