Probably around 45 minutes before Mac Miller’s set at Governors Ball (June 4) was set to takeoff, it was already hard to wiggle your way to a clear-view spot given the fact that fans threw any inkling of personal space out the window. The sea of people drowning in anticipation to sing-a-long to Miller’s rhymes already schooled you on what you were about to witness before he could even take hold of the microphone.
With a yellow Pirates baseball cap and dressed in all black, the Pittsburgh native’s energetic performance automatically gave you a second wind if you’ve been at the festival since it opened the gates at 11:45 a.m. (Miller went on at 4:45 p.m.). “He’s hype,” says one crowd member, which was evident during his performance of “Donald Trump,” “100 Grandkids” and “Loud.”
The music’s sound level reached up to the high heavens, you just knew the stage rattled given the vibrations of the bass in the massive speakers. Miller had to have felt those booming sound waves in his chest, but he didn’t lose breath given his rapid shift from side to side of the stage.
Miller’s set also wasn’t complete without paying tribute to the late Prince. He led the cheering crowd in a resounding rendition of “Purple Rain” that echoed throughout Randall’s Island Park.
It’s safe to say that Miller, a.k.a. Larry Fisherman, left his fans and new believers satisfied, marking his performance as another standout moment from Governors Ball.
