Taking the Jimmy Kimmel Live! stage by storm (Nov. 20), H.E.R. appeared on the set cloaked in her signature identity-preserving sunglasses. Bringing an electrifying performance of “Fate” from the I Used To Know Her: Part 2 EP, the 21-year-old blended the moving sounds of past and present R&B.
Sounding eerily similar to Michael Jackson’s “Earth Song,” the rising artist began her set with subtle guitar strokes. Delivering the original lyrics to “Fate” her vocal execution cemented what made this song a standout. Carrying the weight of her vocals, the band of singers and musicians joined the neo-soul singer for the chorus.
As the production picked up, “Earth Song” underlying presence became undeniable as the songstress began singing “What about yesterday (What about us)/What about the seas/(What about us)/The heavens are falling down/(What about us)/I can’t even breathe/(What about us)/What about apathy/(What about us).”
Bringing her track back into center focus, H.E.R., meaning “Having Everything Revealed,” delivered a high impact, thought-provoking performance.
