Kendrick Lamar is gearing up for a big night at the 58th annual Grammy Awards in February. But that anticipation hasn’t stopped the Compton native from gifting viewers with one-of-a-kind visuals to accompany certain tracks off his critically-acclaimed album To Pimp A Butterfly. So here enters a short-film titled God Is Gangsta, which fuses two of the project’s standout melodies, “U” and “For Sale?” into a 7-minute cinematic journey.
In the first scene for “U,” the 28-year-old artist cozies up to a bottle of brown liquor while he drunkenly recites his lyrics. The video later pictures Lamar at Le Silencio in Paris, France in “For Sale?” where a group of half-naked women keep his body warm rather than that glass of liquor we saw earlier. He later gets doused in a tub of water, symbolizing a baptism/cleansing.
This arrival follows that of Lamar’s 11 Grammy nominations, which were announced earlier this year. It also made him the first Hip-Hop artist to reach that feat. In an interview with The New York Times, Lamar said if he does win any of those accolades, it’ll not only be an achievement for him, but for the entire genre of rap.
“They’re all important, because of the foundation the forefathers laid before me,” he said. “Nas didn’t get a chance to be in that position, Pac. So to be acknowledged and to actually win, it’s for all of them.”
