…
VIBE: What inspired “WHATCHUSAY”? What is it about?A:
Sevyn Streeter: I wrote “WHATCHUSAY” based off all the relationships I hear about – including my own past relationships – where you basically hold people down and then they split out… and you know I had a cousin that went through something like this and I’ve gone thru it before and its real… “WHATCHUSAY” is finding that inner voice that stands up for yourself and confronts that person that had the audacity to shit on the person that did well by them when they’re not in such great spaces.
Tell us about the video – what’s the vibe? Inspiration? Attitude?
The video is bold, gritty, and sexy. It’s an ode to the 90s and the 90s videos that I grew up lovingThe inspiration was Janet Jackson. The video is just my way of speaking my truth and the truth of others who have been through it.
What would you say is the biggest difference from your sound in “WHATCHUSAY” versus your past music?
A: I think the difference is in the past you know, I would kind of complain about hardships. In “WHATCHUSAY,” I’m not complaining anymore about what guys did to me or who broke my heart in “WHATCHUSAY” I’m a grown woman and I’ll just handle the situation accordingly. There is no time for sobbing in bed for 3 days over a ni**a… Just handle it and move
“Whatchusay” is the lead single from the forthcoming Drunken Wordz x Sober Thoughtz album.
