In our society, many of us tend to favor a “believe it when I see it” mentality when the prospect of a good thing happens in our lives. Whether you blame it on today’s culture or a genetic predisposition to expect the worst from mankind, the true causality may never be revealed. What is uncovered, however, is a very sad truth: most of us prefer it that way.
Shamefully I admit that like so many of you, I too have fallen victim to this frame of mind. I often found myself questioning a woman’s machinations for simply showing me a kind gesture. The very notion of someone loving me for the sake of loving me was unfathomable and seen as too good to be true. Something had to be wrong with her right? I now realize that the problem wasn’t with her at all… The problem was with me.
If the first thing that comes to mind when you find someone you like is “this can’t be real”, then maybe it’s time for you to have a serious conversation with the man/woman in the mirror.
For the record, you are deserving of being loved but you can’t be loved if your negative attitude and lack of trust prevents you from receiving it. You will be doing a disservice to yourself and your significant other by placing roadblocks on your path to a healthy relationship.
Are you the type of person who sabotages your relationship by looking to make a mountain out of a molehill for the smallest infraction just so you can say “Ha! I was right. I knew there was something wrong with him”? Then yay! You win an all-expenses paid vacation to Lonelyville! Population: 1.
Sure you’ve been hurt before and it makes it very difficult to trust someone but keep in mind that if you choose to be in a relationship, at some point, you’re gonna be hurt. It’s a part of life.
I guarantee that kind of constant ridicule will eventually make a person run away.
There’s no such thing as a perfect man or woman. So there will be bumps in the road if you opt out of the single life. It’s inevitable but you will never know where that road will lead if you’re constantly stopping the journey before it starts.
Get out of your own way… I’m just saying.–Michael Keith (@Michaelkeith112)
