Red Bull Music Academy spotlights DFA, the iconic NYC record label that got the indie kids to dance in this fresh video, featuring music and appearances from James Murphy, LCD Soundsystem, The Rapture, Holy Ghost!, The Juan MacLean, Shit Robot, Sinkane, YACHT and many more.
“DFA is a family,” says Jonathan Galkin (DFA’s Co-Founder) in the video. “Dysfunctional is a good word.”
But what puts the “fun” in it? “The fundamental element of the DFA sound tends to be the way the kickdrum works, which tends to be a steady fork,” says composer Peter Gordon. Another “fun”-fused word.
And for every release the folks at RBMA throw a bangin’ party to go with it. On May 25th, Red Bull Music Academy takes overs Brooklyn’s Grand Prospect Hall for a seven-hour, multi-room celebration of the label’s 12th anniversary. The night will see performances by James Murphy and over 15 more live acts and DJs spanning the entire history of DFA, including some fist ever US performances.
