After announcing a new show for HBO, executive producers Robin Thede and Issa Rae’s creation has received a release date and debuted its replay-worthy trailer on Sunday (July 7). A Black Lady Sketch Show features various comedic scenarios starring A-list actresses like Angela Bassett, Natasha Rothwell, Amber Riley, Marsai Martin, Laverne Cox, Aja Naomi King, Tia Mowry, and Insecure‘s very own Yvonne Orji. ABLSS also stars Ashley Nicole Black, Thede, Gabrielle Dennis, and Quinta Brinson.
“I am more excited about A Black Lady Sketch Show than I have ever been about anything in my whole career,” Thede tweeted in late June. The trailer also garnered reactions from fellow actresses Gabrielle Union, Jackee Harry, and Yvette Nicole Brown. For Brinson, this program has opened up a new spectrum for black women in every aspect of production.
“My entire career has been spent either alone or entirely white spaces,” she said. “But joining #ABLSS made me feel like I got to be another layer of black woman. I don’t have to represent ALL the black women in the room.”
