Actor Philip Seymour Hoffman has died in his New York City apartment this morning (Feb. 2). Apparently perishing from a drug overdose, the Academy Award-winning actor was found with a hypodermic needle in his arm, according to reports.
Hoffman’s personal assistant made the discovery at his Greenwich village residence at around 11:30 a.m. this morning. Officials are still investigating the scene at this time.
The 46-year-old actor, who won the Best Actor Oscar award for his starring role in Capote was also a theatre aficionado, having won three Tony Awards for his work on Broadway. In a 2006 interview with 60 Minutes, the actor revealed a bout with drugs and alcohol.
“It was all that [drugs and alcohol], yeah, it was anything I could get my hands on… I liked it all,” he said.
He was later checked into a rehabilitation facility for use of prescription drugs and heroine in 2012, thanking “a great group of friends and family” for their support.
Hoffman is survived by one son and two daughters.
