Famed actor Alan Rickman has passed away at the age of 69, The Guardian reports. Rickman was battling cancer and died in London on Thursday (Jan. 14).
Rickman was best known for his chilling and commanding role as Professor Severus Snape in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter film series. But he previously acted alongside Bruce Willis in Die Hard, and later Love Actually directed by Richard Curtis.
He was also a mainstay on the theatrical stage, performing at prominent U.K. establishments like the Olivier Theatre and the Abbey Theatre in Dublin. One of his most noteworthy performances was from Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra.
Rickman was a revered actor both in his native home of the U.K. and stateside, where he’s won a Golden Globe, BAFTA, and an Emmy Award among many other accolades for his on-screen portrayals.
