Richard Olango, father of Alfred Olango, announced the launch of the Alfred Olango Justice and Unity Foundation in San Diego on Saturday (Oct. 29).
The initiative arrives roughly one month after El Cajon police officer Richard Gonsalves fatally shot Alfred on Sept. 27 during what his family has deemed a mental breakdown. “Police are supposed to use a gun as a last resort,” Richard Olango said while speaking before a crowd during an International Day of Remembrance for Victims of Police Brutality event. “From the time police arrived to the time my son was dead was one minute and 29 seconds.”
Through the foundation created in his son’s honor, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports that Olango plans to improve police training in the areas of psychology, human behavior, criminal justice and discipline, which he deems foundational to the field. Although based in San Diego, the nonprofit organization plans to bring justice and unity to “the whole world” as it continues to expand.
