Beyonce has officially started a “thing”. After dropping her immaculate visual album Beyonce on iTunes out of nowhere ast December, Apple is now hoping record labels will push their artists to follow suit.
According to Billboard, Apple Inc.’s music chief Robert Kondrk has been urging major labels to mimic Bey’s surprise album tactic to help speed up sluggish digital download sales.
In meetings held during Grammy Week in LA, Kondrk was reportedly not picky, saying that the albums could be released to other music retailers, but not streaming services like Pandora and Spotify. Since digital track sales fell 5.7 percent from 1.34 billion units to 1.26 billion units in 2013, according to Nielsen SoundScan, Kondrk is trying to come up with techniques to see that streaming services are not included in the fun.
Beyonce’s self-titled surprise album shattered iTunes records, selling 465,000 copies in its first week of release on iTunes without a physical copy on shelves.
So far, only rapper Kid CuDi has implemented the Bey method, releasing the surprise album, Satellite Flight, only to digital music retailers led by iTunes last week.
