Song: “Champion” from NBA 2K10
Sample Lyrics: “I reign supreme, never dreamed of being nothing less/On the court in New Jersey, tangled up inside the nets”
Better Than Artest’s Track? No. Within the context of the 2K video game this track was recorded for, the Compton rapper does his thing. He even manages to namedrop a bunch of the NBA’s 30 teams. But it’s nowhere near as inspirational or passionate as Artest’s joint. Sorry, Game.
Artist: Dame Dash, featuring Kanye West, Beanie Sigel, Cam’Ron, Young Chris and Twista
Song: “Champions” from the 2002’s Dame Dash Presents…Paid In Full soundtrack
Sample Lyrics: “I got plans that was better than jail/Now we look like Bird, Parish, Kevin McHale/Scott, Worthy, Jabbar and Magic, oh my god, it’s Magic/Isiah, Dumars, I will carve your casket” (Cam)
Better Than Artest’s Track? No. Queen’s original version of “We Are The Champions,” which this song samples, blows away anything on this list. But between Dame Dash’s nonstop trash-talking (STFU for two seconds, Dame!) and the helter-skelter contributions from Roc-A-Fella’s B-Team (well, B-Team back then, at least), this was more like watching the 2004 bronze medal-winning Olympic squad than the 1992 Dream Team.
THE VERDICT: We’re gonna give you some credit here, Ron-Ron. “Champion” goes pretty hard compared to some of the songs on this list. But that doesn’t mean we’ve forgotten about your 2006 album, My World. So enjoy making music during the offseason—but, please (please, please, please!) don’t quit your day job.
